Day 1Sun, Apr 20
Fiaker Horse-Drawn…Burggarten and Moz…
4 stops

Fiaker Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

Wrap up the afternoon with a classic Fiaker carriage ride departing from Heldenplatz, which loops kids through the historic center in about 20 minutes. It feels festive rather than touristy when you book directly with one of the licensed drivers, and smaller kids in particular love the novelty of clip-clopping past the Opera House.

Burggarten and Mozart Statue

After lunch, walk five minutes to the Burggarten for open green space where kids can run around while parents decompress. The famous gilded Mozart statue makes for an easy photo stop and a low-key way to introduce the city's musical history.

Cafe Landtmann

One of Vienna's most storied grand cafes, Landtmann sits right on the Ringstrasse and serves the full Viennese breakfast spread plus excellent Wiener Schnitzel for lunch. The waitstaff are genuinely welcoming to families, and the Apfelstrudel here is a benchmark worth setting early in the trip.

Kaiserliche Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury)

Start the morning at the Imperial Treasury inside the Hofburg Palace complex, where kids can gawk at the actual Habsburg crown jewels and a 2.5-meter narwhal tusk that medieval Europeans believed was a unicorn horn. The collection is compact enough to hold attention without museum fatigue.

Schonbrunn Palace …Naschmarkt
4 stops

Schonbrunn Palace Maze and Gardens

Arrive at Schonbrunn early to beat the crowds and head straight for the famous hedge maze and labyrinth in the palace gardens, which costs a small fee and is genuinely challenging enough to entertain kids ages 5 and up. The hilltop Gloriette monument is a 15-minute uphill walk and rewards you with a panoramic view of Vienna that makes the climb worthwhile.

Naschmarkt

Take the U4 two stops to Naschmarkt, Vienna's beloved open-air market stretching along the Wienzeile, and let the family graze through Turkish mezze, Austrian cheese stalls, fresh juice bars, and pretzel vendors for a relaxed late lunch. Kids who are picky eaters tend to do well here because the variety is enormous and vendors are used to handing out samples.

Mariahilfer Strasse Shopping

Vienna's main pedestrian shopping boulevard is a short walk from Naschmarkt and has a full H&M, a large Libro bookshop with a great kids section, and a Legostore that will slow everyone down considerably. It is the most practical place in the city to restock forgotten travel items or pick up Vienna-themed souvenirs without paying Innere Stadt prices.

Schonbrunn Zoo (Tiergarten Schonbrunn)

The world's oldest zoo sits inside the palace grounds and is beautifully integrated into the baroque landscape, with giant pandas, polar bears, and a walk-through rainforest pavilion. Plan on two to three hours, and note that the on-site Tirolergarten restaurant serves solid Austrian comfort food at reasonable prices for a tourist-heavy attraction.

Prater Hauptallee …Zoom Kindermuseum
4 stops

Prater Hauptallee Bike Ride

Rent bikes from Leihradl im Prater, a rental shop right at the park entrance, and ride the flat, tree-lined Hauptallee that stretches four kilometers through the chestnut forest. The path is wide, car-free, and gentle enough for kids on balance bikes or with training wheels, with benches along the way for rest stops.

Zoom Kindermuseum

End the trip with a visit to ZOOM Kindermuseum in the MuseumsQuartier, a hands-on children's museum with age-specific zones for toddlers, school-age kids, and tweens, all built around open-ended creative play rather than passive exhibits. Book time slots in advance online as sessions fill up, especially on weekends.

Schweizerhaus Beer Garden

Return bikes and walk five minutes to Schweizerhaus, a legendary Prague-beer-and-Stelze (pork knuckle) garden that has been operating in the Prater since 1920. Families are very welcome at the long wooden tables, and the menu has simple options like grilled sausages and bread that work well for kids who have been running around all morning.

Wiener Wurstelprater (Prater Amusement Park)

The Prater fairground has been operating since 1766 and entry to the grounds is completely free, with individual rides ticketed separately, making it easy to budget based on your kids' appetites for thrills. The iconic Riesenrad giant Ferris wheel built in 1897 is a must and offers a slow, stately view of Vienna that doubles as a history lesson.
